Martha Mariam Vanitha Samajam

The women's fellowship of the Malankara Orthodox Church - prayer, formation, and service in our Ballarat parish and across the worldwide Church.

Martha Mariam Vanitha Samajam is the women's wing of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church - among the largest spiritual fellowships in the Church, uniting women from parishes across all 30 dioceses worldwide. At St. Dionysius, our parish unit gathers women in prayer, study, and service, rooted in the same apostolic faith we share every Sunday.

A living fellowship

Founded in 1928 under the patronage of the late Very Rev. M. C. Kuriakose Ramban, with K. M. Annamma and her co-workers, the Samajam takes its name from the Blessed Virgin Mary, its patron saint. Its motto - Prarthikkuka, Pravarthikkuka, Prakasikkuka - calls members to pray, work, and shine: three simple words that shape everything the fellowship does.

How we are organised

The Samajam is guided by a Central Committee representing every diocese of the Church, with diocesan and parish committees coordinating local life. Through retreats, Bible classes, leadership training, examinations, and competitions, members grow in faith and confidence - at the parish level and as part of a worldwide sisterhood.

Formation and empowerment

The fellowship nurtures women through theological education, leadership development, and social awareness, encouraging active participation in church and community life. Members lead prayer groups, Bible studies, fellowship meetings, and charitable initiatives. The Samajam also speaks for social justice, women's dignity, equal opportunity, and the rejection of harmful practices such as the dowry system.

Service in Christ's name

Charitable work is central to the Samajam's witness. The Snehasparsam Project offers marriage assistance, educational support, medical aid, and housing help for widows and families in need. Other initiatives - including Navajyoti MOMS Charitable Society and Chaithanya Samskarika Koottayma - extend that care further. The triannual magazine Vanitha Deepthi keeps members connected across parishes and continents.

Today at our parish

For nearly a century, Martha Mariam Vanitha Samajam has strengthened the place of women in church administration, liturgical life, education, and leadership. Here in Ballarat, we share in that legacy - a fellowship for spiritual growth, mutual support, and service. If you would like to join or learn more, speak to a member after Qurbana or contact the parish office.
